Meet Estefania Aguirre-Zapata
Estefanía Aguirre Zapata is a Biomedical Engineer with a Master’s degree in Automation and Control and a Ph.D. in Control Systems Engineering. Her academic training combines systems theory, mathematical modeling, and biomedical applications, with a strong emphasis on physiological processes.
During her Master’s studies, she worked on state estimation for nonlinear systems with measurement delay, applying advanced control techniques to the glucose homeostatic mechanism in patients with type 1 diabetes. Her doctoral research focused on interpretability and parameter identifiability in the modeling of biotechnological processes, contributing methodological advances to enhance transparency and reliability in semi-physical models.
Estefanía is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Instituto de Automática (INAUT), Universidad Nacional de San Juan – CONICET (Argentina). She joins the Diabetes Center Berne (DCB) through an SNSF-funded scientific exchange. During her stay in Bern, she works on the calibration and validation of a modular metabolic simulator of glucose metabolism, supporting digital twin approaches for personalized diabetes research.
Outside academia, she enjoys traveling, cooking, and going to the gym. She is also interested in graphic design and digital arts, which reflect her appreciation for creativity as a complement to analytical thinking.
