Research Profile Prof. Lia Bally
Research focus
The research group led by Prof. Lia Bally is particularly interested with the regulation of glucose homeostasis and its disturbances, which lead to diabetes and other diseases with impaired blood sugar control. In detail, the complex interplay between nutrition, hormones, and the metabolic communication between organs in people with diabetes and obesity is being investigated. Numerous metabolic techniques are used to address these complex questions, including the use of stable isotopes to study the kinetics of metabolic substrates and hormones in humans. The dynamic assessment of human metabolic processes is further complemented by the use of non-invasive imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Computer-assisted modelling approaches are used to visualize and analyses mechanisms in detail. Another focus is the individualized prevention and therapy of metabolic diseases using state-of-the-art technologies. Investigations on the efficacy and safety of artificial pancreas contributed to the broad clinical application of this important therapy. In parallel, the working group is developing new approaches in nutrition using digital technology.
